William Charles PARKER was born 1868, County Durham, England.
He was educated to be a teacher but hated the thought of it. His brother Robert was coming to New Zealand so he made up his mind to come with him. They arrived in New Zealand about 1887 and worked as ploughmen in the Waikato before moving to Hawkes Bay. Robert did not marry and returned to England in 1912.
William married Clara Alice JOHNSTON (daughter of John and Jane Harriet JOHNSTON of Nelson), at St Matthew's Church Hastings on 20 July 1892.
They lived at Wanstead (east of Waipawa) until 1902, when they were burnt out, Argyle, Petane [Bay View], (north of Napier) and Rangiwhahia (north-east of Feilding).
While living in Central Hawkes Bay, Charles and brother Robert supplemented their farming income building roads in the area.
